Bruxism and TMJ Treatment

Bruxism and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD, TMJ)

Are you having an issue with teeth grinding or clenching? A mouthguard will help protect your teeth.

You're likely already familiar with bruxism if you're a teeth grinder. Still, for those who aren't, bruxism is a condition where a person grinds, clenches, or gnashes their teeth, which can lead to tooth sensitivity, worn teeth, damaged teeth, and sore jaws.

50% of people unconsciously grind their teeth; they may not even know they do it without being made aware of it by a partner, friend, or dentist. People can grind during the night when they are asleep or sitting at their desks at work.

If a person hears from a partner or friend that they have teeth grinding issues, they can visit their local dentist to get a mouthguard to help protect their teeth. However, with regular dental cleaning exams, we can detect if you have a bruxism issue and may suggest using a mouthguard.

It's important to note that catching bruxism early on helps prevent spending lots of money against costly tooth repair - tooth repair with the low cost of a mouth guard.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD, TMJ)

TMD (also commonly referred to as TMJ) is a disorder in the temporomandibular joint that causes a person pain and discomfort for short or long periods. The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull, and causes for pain in this area aren't precisely known by researchers, but some leading studies have suggested it is due to the following:

  • Arthritis
  • Injury to the temporomandibular joint
  • Bruxism
