My journey in dentistry started 20 years ago, so I was 16. I was a dental assistant. That’s really what got me started in the field, but I think what’s kept me in this field for as long as I have and what will continue to kind of push me to learn more and be in this field is that it’s forever changing.
I feel like dentistry, medicine, it’s never a dull day. Like you really, you’re always thinking, you’re always problem solving. I think to me what keeps me in this and loving it is really just the day-to-day things, just making people believe happy.
I had a bachelor’s in dental hygiene. After that, I did my continuum education, a lot of continuum education as a hygienist, and then I got my DDS. Following my DDS, I mean, I feel like continuum education is just part of my daily life.
There’s a minimum of education that we need to keep our license. I would say every year, I’m probably doing probably five times more than that just because I am so involved in my field. I think that if you’re not doing continuum education, then you really are just selling yourself short or selling your patients short, and it’s really, it’s easy to get bogged down.
When it comes to CE, I’m really just doing things that I love to do and just learning more about the latest research and what’s happening and just trying to be up-to-date on everything. The most rewarding aspect of dentistry to me is really just knowing people, getting to know my patients, getting to know them at a personal level, just being a part of, even if it’s a small part of their life, that they don’t look at going to the dentist in fear, or they don’t look at coming in here as, oh my gosh, I need to go to the dentist. They look forward to coming into seeing me.
They look forward to getting through the end of a treatment, really finding the end part of doing a big restorative case or just seeing someone through an airway issue. It’s really just that end result and just trying to make it a pleasant experience along the way is why I think I, you know, love this field and I think that my patients love me.
Marsha Sonaty, DDS
Dr. Marsha Sonaty was born and raised in Cleveland, OH. She is a second-generation Polish-American and the eldest of four siblings.
Her love for dentistry began at age 15 when she worked as a dental assistant. She enjoys the industry’s blend of artistry, education, and precision, which allows her to serve others meaningfully. Dr. Sonaty pursued her DDS degree from The Ohio State University, graduating magna cum laude after practicing dental hygiene for a decade.
She also discovered biologic and holistic dentistry. She has treated many patients with dental and systemic health issues throughout her career. While the modern medical model divides health into specialties, she prefers integrative medicine (including medical and dental), which sees the body as a whole. Biologic dentistry aligned with her vision for health and seemed the perfect fit for her dental practice.

It’s one of those situations where I didn’t even realize how mediocre (at best) my previous dental care was until I experienced excellent care. Everyone was so thorough and walked me through all of my images and things to watch and put me in the driver seat. The dentist spent a significant time with me, which I have never experienced before. Typically the dentist is in and out and the majority of my time is spent with the hygienist. I’m also glad I switched because a few things that are kind of serious have been overlooked my years by my previous dentist. It’s definitely more of an investment because my insurance only covers a fraction of the preventive care here, but well worth every penny.

Dr. F uses modern techniques to digitally measure the size of a tooth, and when I started at this office, he was my third dentist in a year because of a messed up molar crown. He got it right the first time! No worries about chewing or biting, it’s been a few years. My mouth has amalgam fillings from the 1970s and early 1980s. Yes, I’m afraid of letting someone use tools in my mouth. Dr. F saw me the same day when an upper tooth cracked and broke. It was not possible to fix it on the same day, but the compassion of this dentist and his team is remarkable. I received a temporary filling and just knowing that my problem is him concern made me feel better, regardless of the outcome. I want to preserve the tooth and it seems like it’s possible. Enough of the root is healthy, even with so much mercury filling. Long live Dr. F and his team at Louisville Studio Z Dental.

I’m a relatively new patient but I’ve been very happy with Studio Z. Last cleaning they showed me something on an x-ray and said I probably need to have a root canal replaced… since I am not a dentist and can’t read x-rays, I wasn’t sure what I was seeing. And since I didn’t have any pain, and didn’t want to experience the pain of a root canal, I opted to wait it out. Of course, a month later I woke up with excruciating pain in that tooth and ended up back at Studio Z! Amazingly, they told me I could just come right over! I had a new root canal done 2 days later and feel back to normal. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is “listen to the experienced people trained to look at x-rays of teeth!” 🙂 And Studio Z is full of those people.
